78 landlords booked for stealing canal water

SHEIKHUPURA: Khanqah Dogran police registered on Monday cases against 78 influential landlords while 10 of them were arrested on the charge of stealing canal water.

Upper Gogera Canal Chief Executive Chaudhry Asghar Ali told reporters that complaints were received from tail-enders that some landlords were involved in stealing water which deprived them of canal water.

He said a team headed by field inspector technical Muhammad Akram Khan Faridi was constituted which raided the Mallay distributary near Khanqah Dogran and found some landlords involved in stealing water. The team also seized pipes and other equipment being used for stealing canal water.

Police claimed to have arrested 10 water thieves out of 78. Those arrested were identified as llyas Jutt, Mushtaq, Farzand, Hanif, Wahab, Naseer Rehmani, Jamil Dogar, Ramzan, Asif and Azmat.

A police spokesman said the rest of the accused would soon be arrested.
