Trackers to be installed on police vehicles

Lahore: The Punjab Government has decided to install trackers at an estimated cost of Rs250 million on over 7,ooo police vehicles to monitor their movement, the News has learnt.
 
Documents reveal that the decision was taken after receiving complaints against the misuse of department vehicles by polices officials. It has been decided that the police vehicles would be monitored by the Directorate of Monitoring of Home Department.
 
The overall cost of this project is Rs.250 million and in the first phase, Rs.69.8 million will be spent on installing the trackers in the current fiscal year, whereas Rs.25.5 million will be spent every year. The cost of a tracker is Rs.36,000. The Home Department has devised the project – Fleet Management System – to install the trackers with the help of the Punjab Information Technology Board and the Sparco.
 
A control room will be established at the Directorate of Monitoring for this purpose. Home Department sources confided that the department had suggested trackers installation on the police vehicles whose misuse was causing the government a loss of millions of rupees in terms of fuel and maintenance. In this regard, a summary had been sent to the chief minister for his approval.
 
Notably, the Punjab Police have 70,202 vehicles which include 423 cars, 505 jeeps, 464 double-cabin vehicles, 4,527 single-cabin vehicles, 330 buses, 317 prisoner vans, 100 trucks, 62 mobile canteens, 42 mobile forensic science laboratories, 35 forklifters, 65 motorboats, 24 armoured personnel carriers, 14 break-down vehicles, 14 water boozers, 19 coaches, seven cranes and three tractors.
