Allied Hospital to have special ward for police

FAISALABAD: A 50-bed special ward will be set up at Allied Hospital in collaboration with the Punjab Medical College (PMC) and the district police for treatment of policemen.

Upper portion of Allied Hospital’s recently constructed medicine emergency ward had been selected for the project to be initiated with the help of donation from local philanthropists.

The ward will be first of its kind for treatment of policemen ranging from constables to deputy inspector generals. Earlier, policemen were being treated at a small hospital set up at the police lines.

Dr Muhammad Irfan, coordinator of the PMC for the project, told Dawn that a couple of days ago PMC Principal Prof Zahid Yaseen Hashmi and City Police Officer (CPO) Dr Haider Ashraf had held a meeting over the issue of treatment of policemen.

He said Prof Hashmi had offered a special ward for policemen at the hospital and the CPO had agreed.

He said the police and the hospital administration had inspected two sites -- upper portion of the emergency ward and a place adjacent to the burns centre -- for the special ward. After mutual consultation the former was selected.

The hospital would provide consultation for round-the-clock treatment of policemen. He said standard operating procedures of the project would be formulated shortly.

The CPO told Dawn police lacked welfare facilities.

He claimed unlike other law enforcement agencies, police did not have medical facilities.

“For this reason I am exploring this option. A separate police ward will enable the force to get quality and cheap medical and consultancy services under one roof. Hope this will also improve the police’s working in the field,” CPO Ashraf said, adding PC-I of the 50-bed ward was ready.

He also said separate full-fledged Combined Police Hospital in the district was being considered and its PC-I was being prepared.

Besides, he said efforts were being made to allocate beds from other tertiary care units like General Hospital Ghulam Muhammadabad.
