Security on high alert in Punjab

LAHORE: Security has been put on high alert in the Punjab capital in the wake of the operation launched in North Waziristan. The Punjab chief minister chaired a high-level meeting which was also attended by Lahore Corps Commander Lt-Gen Naveed Zaman, Punjab Rangers Director General Maj-Gen Khan Tahir and the General Officer Commanding.

The meeting reviewed security arrangements at sensitive places and important buildings across the province.

Mr Sharif was quoted as saying that time had come to rid the country of the scourge of terrorism and the whole nation stood by its armed forces to foil nefarious designs of anti-Pakistan elements. He said the officers and Jawans of Pakistan Army had rendered supreme sacrifices for the country.

LAHORE SECURITY: Police pickets have been doubled at all arteries and at entry and exit points of the city.

Patrolling has also been enhanced and an additional force of 3,000 policemen has been called for high profile duties in the provincial capital, a police official said.

Capital City Police Officer Chaudhry Shafiq also called an emergent meeting of all divisional SPs and directed them to spare no efforts for the protection of lives and properties of citizens.

He directed the headquarters SP to deploy those police officials who had passed quick response courses and passed out recently for the security of sensitive installations, important public buildings and VIPs.

Chaudhry Shafiq asked the divisional SPs to personally visit their areas and devise strategies for the security at populated markets, plazas, bazaars and public places.

All entry and exit points to the Pakistan Railways installations are also being properly manned and passengers and their luggage will be scanned with metal detectors at railway stations.

Maximum number of PR police staff is being deputed for the protection of railways key points and vital installations.

Joint trolley patrol with the railways staff is also being undertaken. Pilot engines are being run ahead of the main trains in troubled areas.

The PR Police will regularly check the patrolling being conducted by the railways gang men. Any negligence in this behalf will be reported to the general manager (operations) as well as the divisional superintendents concerned.
