SAHIWAL, March 17: The Divisional Election Coordination Committee (DECC) on Sunday held its first meeting here to oversee arrangements to ensure peaceful, transparent and fair elections in  the division.

At the meeting held at his office, Commissioner Nabeel Ahmed Awan ordered formation of District Election Cells with focal persons in three districts Pakpattan; Sahiwal and Qkara.

Mr Awan assured Regional Election Commissioner Muhammad Ishaq Bajwa that both divisional and district administrations would extend complete cooperation to the ECP for holding a smooth and peaceful election.

Mr Bajwa told Dawn that ECP regional office had finalized the list election staff being appointed at more than 2,800 polling stations in the division.

Earlier, he told the meeting that two teams would separately visit both national and provincial assembly constituencies on a regular basis to detect election Code of Conduct violations, if any.

These teams, he said, would also monitor candidates’ election campaigns and other poll-related activities to look for any irregularities.

The meeting was attended by three DCOs, DPOs and additional commissioner.

To ensure a peaceful election, each DPO would develop a district security plan under which all sensitive polling stations would be monitored through CCTV cameras.

FAFEN Election Observation Manager Alweera Rashid said more than 2,000 local election observers would be appointed for the election day to monitor the exercise. She said half of them would be ‘static observers’ while the other half would be called ‘mobile observers’.
