Two arrested for cashing in on public naivety

BAHAWALPUR, Sept 27: The Ahmedpur East city police claim to have arrested a woman ring leader of a gang which embezzled massive amount by luring naive women into depositing cash earnings and jewellery to get dividend in return.

The police said Rawaida, a resident of Ahmedpur East's Mohallah Shikari, impersonated as owner of a carpet export company and convinced many women to deposit their hard-earned money and valuables like jewellery with her to get profit.

A number of women trusted Rawaida who along with an accomplice initially offered attractive monthly return to the clients but disappeared after a few weeks.

The disappointed women met DPO Sohail Habib Tajik and the police tracked down the gang in Multan.

SP (Investigation) Azhar Gujjar recorded the statements of the victims who narrated Rawaida's modus operandi.

Dawn learnt that the police had registered seven cases on the complaints of Nusrat Bibi, Muhammad Fayyaz, Farrukh Anwaar, Muhammad Ilyas and others.

The police also arrested Rawaida's accomplice Qadir Bakhsh and sent them in the lockup. They were in search of other members of the gang.
