FAISALABAD: Police claimed on Thursday to have traced a ‘gang of midwives’ involved in kidnapping newborns and infants and selling them.

Police recovered four children and said three others had passed away.

Madina Town SP Malik Awais told a press conference that police arrested and quizzed Kalsoom Bibi, a resident of 229-RB, Nooran Bibi (494-GB) and Kausar Bibi of Mamokanjan in connection with a kidnapping case. The case was registered with the Mamokanjan police station on the application of Muhammad Ali on Aug 6 last year.

Sources said the three women remained in police custody until a court bailiff got Kalsoom and Nooran Bibi released. He said that during investigation the women had confessed to kidnapping dozens of children and selling them to various people.

The SP said Junaid Umar, Usman, Ahsan and Muhammad Farhan, all below three years, had been recovered. He said Tuman Khan had purchased Junaid for Rs110,000, Ashraf purchased Usman for Rs50,000, Shahnaz Bibi paid Rs50,000 for Ahsan and Sakina Bibi Rs50,000 for Farhan. He said Kalsoom had sold these young ones.

He said three children kidnapped by the gang had passed away and police were making efforts to rearrest Kalsoom and Nooran Bibi to get complete information.

Describing the modus operandi of the gang, Malik Awais said local midwives during delivery conveyed to the family that the child had passed away and the staff had buried the body. Afterwards, he said, the women would steal children and sold them to couples without issue. - By Our Staff Correspondent
