Police ‘nab’ wanted criminal

GUJRAT: Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested wanted robber Muhammad Asif alias Asi who had a head money of Rs300,000 on him.

Asif was the alleged head of a gang involved in highway robberies, especially snatching loader vehicles, and had been at large since long.

Gujrat District Police Officer Rai Ijaz Ahmed told reporters at an emergency news conference that the city police had arrested Asif after a hectic chase whereas five of his nine gang members had already been arrested.

He said the gang was wanted to the Gujrat police in dozens of cases of snatching mini trucks and loader vehicles from the highway area. The gang was also wanted to the Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin and Rawalpindi police for committing the same crime in these districts.

He said the gang often sold the snatched vehicles in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The police also recovered some weapons from the gang leader, however vehicles were yet to be recovered for which the police was investigating.
