GUJRAT: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in collaboration with the Norwegian government has equipped the Crime Scene Unit (CSU) of Gujrat police with the latest gadgets and machinery worth Rs2 million.

It will enable the police to adopt modern techniques in tracing crime through credible evidence collection.

This is the first such project of the UNODC in any district of Punjab as a former Gujrat DPO, Rai Ijaz Ahmed (now serving as Sialkot DPO), had initiated this project through negotiations with the organisation as well as the Norwegian Embassy in Pakistan.

Gujrat SP Headquarters Kamran Mumtaz told Dawn that 90 gadgets had been provided to the Gujrat police whereas a vehicle worth Rs2.2 million had been given by the police for the project. The vehicle, having four cameras with a TV screen inside and the facility of UPS system, would be used for capturing the footage of any riot scene or public gathering keeping an eye on the public movement.

The UNODC has also trained a number of officials of the local police to operate these gadgets and these officials in turn are training other colleagues at the office of the CSU in the Police Lines.

Around 15 months ago, the Norwegian embassy had helped the Gujrat police establish a separate building and the Crime Scene Unit besides providing computers and hundreds of investigation kits and tools.

An official says the CSU has achieved the technical support on a par with the European police and now acquiring maximum samples and undeniable evidence from the crime scene will be easy with the use of these gadgets.

The gadgets include a blood collection kit, finger print kit, excavation kit, impression kit, pattern print lifter kite, evidence collection kit and bullet trajectory kit.
