RAWALPINDI, Oct 30: Only 385 police officers, including 20 women, from across the country qualified the test conducted by United Nations Selection Assistance Team for deployment in peacekeeping missions for one year, official sources said.

A total of 1,213 applicants, including 120 women, from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), police of the four provinces and the motorway police ranking from head constable to SSP and AIG level took part in the competition which started last Monday at the Police Lines Headquarters Islamabad.

Of the total applicants, the UNSAT shortlisted 385 police officers, including 25 from Islamabad. The test comprised English language section, listening skill, report writing, driving and shooting, including assembling of weapons.

Among the applicants, 130 police officers belonged to ICT while 45 were from Rawalpindi. As many as 25 police officers were shortlisted from the ICT while the number from Rawalpindi was six.

Nearly 600 applicants were disqualified by the UN selection team during English language tests while the remaining lost the race in driving, road testing and shooting. One of the applicants said: “Though the English language tests were difficult, the driving was tougher as a minor mistake was not ignored by the selectors due to which most of the applicants could not qualify.” Even some of the police officers who had already been deployed in UN peacekeeping missions could not qualify the test. Besides other shortcomings, the police officers lacked driving and shooting skills.

Police officers from Rawalpindi who were shortlisted included DSP Iqbal Kazmi, SHO City Yousuf, Inspector Zulfiqar Gilani, SHO Chontra Sanaullah, Inspector Faisal Saleem and SHO Banni Nisar Khan.

SSP Islamabad Yousuf Malik, DSP Headquarters Tahir Malik, SP Traffic Mir Waiz, DSP Malik Naeem Iqbal, DSP Bakhtiar Lillah and DSP Imtiaz Khan were also among those who qualified the test.
