Police claim to have arrested 9,000 POs

LAHORE: The police claimed on Wednesday to have arrested 9,000 proclaimed offenders wanted in dacoity, robbery, murder and kidnapping for ransom in the last 40 days. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar said that among the arrested people included 1,400 proclaimed offenders of A category. He said with the help of Interpol, eight offenders were extradited to Pakistan from abroad in the last two weeks, while many others were being extradited in the coming days.

He said the Counter-Terrorism Department conducted more than 200 intelligence-based operations, in which four militants were brought to justice and 47 were arrested. Dr Anwar said 22 hardened criminals who fired at the police during the confrontation met their end. He said that as 22 callous criminals, who fired at police, were killed and among them, three suspects were those involved in four incidents of dacoity and rape of women.

Up to 27 injured companions of dacoits and robbers who were killed in multiple encounters with the police were taken to the hospital by the policemen. He said that one policeman was martyred while six others were injured in the exchange of fire with robbers, dacoits and criminals. The IGP said the police arrested 400 criminals of 140 groups of dacoits, while more than 1,000 incidents of dacoity, robbery, banditry and theft were traced from these arrested accused. He said work on 16,500 pending applications of robbery, dacoity and theft was ongoing. He said 4,300 drug dealers were arrested and sent to jails and they will be given severe punishments.
