Traffic police providing licences at doorsteps

Apr 30, 2012

LAHORE: The City Traffic Police (CTP) have launched a special campaign to issue new driving licences to every citizen at their doorstep through a mobile van, especially at educational institutions and workplaces, to save the time of the public, Daily Times has learnt.

Every willing candidate is asked to bring the original Computerised National Identity Card, its photocopy and Rs 60 to get the driving permit. The same van visits the area after 42 days, and after conducting the driving test, a permanent licence is issued to the citizen, student or employee.

The CTP is also working to educate and aware the citizens about traffic laws through different programmes, which started in the city a couple of months ago, in order to save the lives of citizens, especially youth.

Talking to Daily Times, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr Usman Anwar said that traffic police had launched a programme to issue learner permits and fresh driving licences at the citizens’ doorsteps.

He said that the motive of this campaign was to facilitate citizens and educate them about traffic laws and signs, and urge them to follow rules regarding lane and line during driving.

He said that the traffic police had issued 6,011 learner permits between January and April 7, 2012, adding that around 3,500 new driving permits had been issued in the last 22 days alone.

The CTO said that traffic police had also launched an awareness campaign regarding traffic rules and regulations on 20 model roads to maintain the flow of traffic and reduce the ratio of accidents.

“Traffic wardens will educate citizens about traffic signals, lane, line, stop line, wrong parking and hazards of cell phone while driving. They have also started distributing awareness pamphlets in this regard,” he said.

He that a traffic education unit also accompanied the mobile learner permit van, which conducted a special lecture for students whereon they were told about traffic laws, road signs and other measures of safe driving.

They were also informed about hazards of one wheeling, over-speeding and use of mobile phone during driving.

He said that under the supervision of a DSP, an inspector, two lady wardens, two wardens and two constables were working in a mobile van, who had been issuing driving permits to citizens, even on Sundays. He said that another three mobile vans would be acquired soon to facilitate citizens. imran chaudhry
