Police investigation data now a click away

LAHORE: Computerisation of the data of Investigation Wing would revolutionise the investigation process, as everyone would be able to get details of an investigation through a click only on a computer, claimed DIG Investigation Sultan Ahmad Chaudhry on Sunday.

Talking to APP, he said the wing had computerised all FIRs, numbering about 86,000, registered in 2015. Besides, investigation details of every case registered in 2016 had been computerised. He said it was for the first time in the history of the country that the investigation data had been computerised and centralised through a server. And the project has unanimously been supported by every police officer. He said officers who designed the software, Polcom, and worked practically for computerisation of the data were praise-worthy.

He said every detail of the investigation of a case was being uploaded on Polcam. It included all information on the missal (the investigation file of a case). The wing has uploaded naqsha (crime scene graphical description), details of the accused persons who were challaned and the details of the proclaimed offenders. A centralised database of the details of criminals and proclaimed offenders has been established for the first time under the Criminal Data Management System. Earlier, the police department was solely dependent on National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for database. The investigation wing was collecting latent fingerprints of the accused persons too.

The computerisation of the data would help monitor investigation by the officials. The status and details of a case would be a click away from an official. He could check the status and details of any case while sitting in his office. Before that, it was very difficult for an officer to monitor cases that had piled up in large numbers, up to an average of 10,000 in each division per year. He said the system would help promote transparency. Once a missal was updated on the system, the investigation official could not temper with it. Every official can access details of every case, therefore complaints of the past about tempering of evidence or missal by the investigation officer would come to an end.

Centralisation and computerisation of the data would help cover up delay in investigations too. Before the computerisation of the data, an official needed a lot of time and input to access a case. In Lahore, the project is being established at a fast pace as a model. The other districts are also computerising data of the Investigation Wing too. After the establishment of the system in all districts, it would become quite easy to share details of the cases, criminals and proclaimed offenders, the DIG claimed.
