Faisalabad: A suspect was gunned down in an encounter following his bid to escape after killing an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) on Wednesday.

ASI Shabbir along with another policeman was on his way in a private car transporting suspect Ibrar, who had been sent on judicial remand. When they reached near Makoana, Ibrar allegedly grabbed the ASI's official pistol and shot at him and escaped with the pistol in handcuffs. The ASI died on the spot.

On being informed of the incident, police officials, including the city police officer, rushed to the spot and cordoned off nearby villages. They also sought assistance of the villagers who pointed out that they had seen a hand-cuffed man with a pistol fleeing towards the fields.

Police said they besieged the fields when Ibrar allegedly opened fire on them, which was retaliated. Resultantly, Ibrar died in the firing.

Ibrar was said to be a drug-pusher and booked by police for selling narcotics in the past as well.
