MUZAFFARGARH: The Alipur police registered a case against six people under the Fisheries Act for catching fish in the river Chenab after throwing poison into it here on Sunday.

Sources said that accused Sajjad, Nawaz, Haji Ahmad and their three accomplices caught dead fish when they emerged on the floating water due to the effect of poison they threw at a specific spot in the river. All the accused later marketed the fish in Muzaffargarh and Multan.

Rana Mohammad Imran told police that last week the accused had thrown poison into the river Chenab at Head Punjnad where hundreds of fish died.

DPO Awais Ahmad ordered the Sadar police station of Alipur to register a case against the accused under the Fisheries Act.

The accused used to throw poison in Taunsa Barrage and Head Punjnad to catch the fish easily which they would sell in the market at attractive rates.

The rate of the river Chenab fish was Rs400 to Rs500 per kilo while the rate of pond fish ranged from Rs250 to Rs300.

Some hunters had thrown poison into the river Indus on Ghazi Ghat last month which resulted in the death of a dolphin, a rare and costly specie, but police did not register any case.

The fisheries assistant director said it was illegal to throw poison into the river to catch fish.
