IGP Orders Arrest of Man Who Burnt Wife

Oct 09, 2017

LAHORE: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Arif Nawaz on Sunday directed the district police officer (DPO) of Sialkot to arrest the persons involved in setting a newly married woman ablaze on Oct 6.

Mahjabeen, 22, had contracted a marriage with Bilal two months ago. On Oct 6, she was present in her house when Bilal along with his sister, Shamsa, came there and the couple exchanged harsh words with each other. Bilal set Mahjabeen ablaze and fled the scene. She suffered 70pc burns and was shifted to the Mayo Hospital in critical condition.

Mahjabeen’s father Muhammad Asif said Bilal, who was already married with two children, had contracted the marriage secretly. He had rented a separate house for his daughter. When his family came to know about his second marriage, they started pressurising him to divorce Mahjabeen. Later, Bilal and his family set her ablaze, Asif said the suspects had told him that his daughter had caught fire while cooking in kitchen.

Investigation Officer (IO) Sarwar said the Rangpura Police Station had registered an attempt-to-murder case against Bilal and his sister Shamsa.

Head of Department of Plastic Surgery Ward Mayo Hospital Dr Mustehsan said they were trying to save the patient’s life but there were little chances of her survival.
