IGP Punjab, Amjad Javed Saleemi decided to replicate across Punjab the community policing based pilot project in Multan.
Directions in this regard issued to all field officers.
As per directions of Inspector General of Police, Punjab Amjad Javed Saleemi, a pilot project was started in Multan region few months back with a view to eliminate crime, maintenance of law and order and to bridge the trust deficit between the public and police by engaging community which produced positive results and this is the reason, the PPO decided to replicate such pilot project across Punjab.
In this regard IGP Punjab issued a letter to all field officers to adopt the same SOP regarding the above said project. In this pilot project as per given directions the mosques were made a main source of community center as per Islamic Traditions. All officers of Multan Region including RPO, CPO and SDPOs gathered in Jamia mosques and have constant and close liaison with Juma congregations and exchanged views with each other on various topics including community role in prevention of crime, Theekri Pehra, Establishment of Chaukidara System, Deployment of private guards at worship places, Verification of servants, Information regarding bad characters in the community, information about narcotics, Information about Pos and their harbourers, Police atrocities if any, information about Qabza groups, vagabonds standing outside female educational instaurations, aerial firing, One Wheeling, Kite flying, under age driving, gambers, any Zulm Zyadti in area, rise of specific crime in the area if any, faulty investigation, old enmities and offer of reconciliation with the help of community and notables and any police achievements / sacrifices rendered in the protection of life, property and honour of citizens.
To make this model a success strategy to strengthen community policing in Multan region, various steps were taken in this regard including establishment of whatsapp groups of students and Imam Masajid, installation of dedicated telephone lines to get information with secrecy of caller, ensure the availability of contact numbers of two notables from each village, revival of beat system activation of district dispute resolution committees, holding of public convention, display of cell numbers of police officers at prominent places, ensuring presence of SDPOs and SHOs for fix hours, establishment of community rooms in police stations, engagement of community through schools and colleges, holding of open court, were established and dedicated telephone lines to get information with secrecy of caller and dedicated vehicles to respond 15 calls. Due to this model the complaints lodged in RPO office were reduced by 34% which was the indication regarding the maintenance of trust and confident level of the people in police stations.
Provincial Police Chief further directed the field officers that they should replicate the Multan model in it true spirit in their respective distracts so that with the maximum engagement of community the trust level of police and public could be restored for permanent elimination of crime from the province.
