GUJRAT: The police claim to have arrested the main culprit in killing of a boy who had been kidnapped for ransom on Friday and was found dead on Saturday in Lalamusa.

Sources told Dawn police had arrested four suspects, including a man and his two sons, from the same vicinity where the victim’s family lived after gathering data from mobile phones used to make calls for ransom.

The alleged mastermind of 10-year-old Murtaza’s kidnapping was a 22-year-old boy whose father ran a shop in the same market where the slain boy’s father had been doing business. Police arrested the prime suspect, his father, brother and a close friend.

The suspect had reportedly confessed to the crime however police were continuing their interrogation from all suspects, which was why their identities had been concealed so far.

Some more arrests were possible within the next 24 hours, sources added.

Meanwhile, Gujrat District Police Officer Rai Ijaz was likely to hold a news conference in Lalamusa city on Monday (today) to formally announce the details of police investigation besides making confirmation of the arrests.

Talking to Dawn, Rai Ijaz confirmed reports of the arrests but did not reveal further details as investigation was underway.

Murtaza had been kidnapped on Friday afternoon and was found dead in an open field in Mohallah Mehar on Saturday morning.
