The police in a midnight operation at Punjab Medical Colony arrested 17 people, including seven peddlers, and seized liquor bottles.

The decision of a police operation was taken at a meeting between the PMC administration headed by Principal Dr Zahid Yaseen Hashmi and City Police Officer Dr Haider Ashraf on Tuesday.

Vice-Principal Prof Mohammad Ali Tirmazi, Dr Mohammad Irfan and others were also present.

Sources told Dawn that criminal activities forced the hospital administration to take up the issue with the district police head.

PMC Director Security Prof Dr Safdar Sial handed over a list of criminals running their businesses on the PMC premises to the CPO.

The CPO appointed Lyallpur Town SP Bilal Umar to head the operation. The police arrested criminals at E and F blocks of the college and shifted them to the hospital. The operation continued for more than two hours.

A doctor said the residents of the colony were perturbed because of rising criminal activities on the college premises. He said the gangsters had been selling drugs and liquor.

The CPO said the Civil Lines police had arrested 17 people and registered seven different cases. Those arrested were: Ilyas, Saif, Rofin and Robin (sons of Ilyas), Majid, Rahat Ali, Qasim, Younis, Abdul Razzaq, Javed, Dawood, Sajid, Ali Abbas, Mohammad Ilyas, Uzair, Naeem and Zain.
