RAWALPINDI:Rawalpindi Police on Monday seized a huge cache of illegal weapons being smuggled into the city.

After getting a tip-off, the Cantonment police stopped a car on Peshawar Road near Saddar. The driver, identified as Akhtar Nawaz, was coming from Peshawar along with his wife and three children.

“During a search, the police found 20 rifles, an AK-47, and 23,900 rounds,” said Sub Inspector Rizwan Shah, who led the police party.

The police have taken the couple into custody and registered cases against them. They said Nawaz is a resident of Pabbi, Nowshera district.

“We should not jump to any conclusions before the investigation is complete,” said a police official. Another police official said the weapons were being smuggled to various parts of the district.

In March this year, the Rawalpindi police recovered arms and ammunition near the Motorway intersection from a van and arrested a man. Officials recovered 58 pistols with 12,000 bullets and had claimed the vehicle was en route to Mansehra.
