LAHORE, March 8: DIG (Operations) Tahir Rai has ordered police for unprecedented security measures in the provincial capital to remain vigilant against criminals.

The instructions were issued to all divisional SPs in a meeting called to devise special security arrangements in the aftermath of Karachi’s Abbas Town incident.

Rai told Dawn the Police Department had received intelligence reports about a possible sectarian attack through an explosives-laden vehicle in the provincial capital. In view of the situation, he said the specific community had been sensitised about the serious threats in some recent meetings with its representatives.

“The SPs have been directed to first identify the densely-populated localities of the community in their respective jurisdictions for special security measures,” he said.

He said instructions had also been issued to the police to keep an eye on abandoned vehicles on roads, especially near neighbourhoods of the community under threat.

Special deployment had been made at all entry/exit points of the city to check suspected vehicles, the DIG said and added the police were also getting help from the Counter-Terrorism Department, Special Branch and other LEAs. Patrolling, picketing and deployment of the police in sensitive localities were additional security arrangements, he said. “The threat is of serious nature,” Rai added.
