Apr 10, 2013

LAHORE, April 9: Newly-appointed Capital City Police Officer Mehr Khaliq Dad Luk has said display of arms and aerial firing will not be tolerated and stern action will be taken against those violating the rules.

He said provision of justice to people and solution of their problems was the prime responsibility of the police and all-out measures should be taken for this purpose. He said death in police custody would be checked and strict action taken against the police officials involved in such incidents.

The CCPO was presiding over a high-level meeting of the operations and investigation wings at his office on Tuesday. He said he would evolve a comprehensive system of monitoring in his office under which surprise visits to police stations and pickets would be conducted and immediate action taken against the police officers and staff guilty of dereliction of duty.

Luk directed public complaints not be sent back to the police stations and inquiry should be conducted at least by the divisional SPs personally. He said ‘land mafia’ would not be accepted and any police officer or official backing anyone grabbing property of a citizen would be awarded exemplary punishment.

He said the DIG (operations) and divisional SPs should ensure implementation of the code of conduct for elections with the corporation of all candidates.

He said maximum attention should be paid to the security of sensitive polling stations as well as those where heads of political parties and prominent political leaders would cast their votes.

The CCPO further said the security of religious places should be ensured at all costs and no stone should be left unturned for safety at sensitive religious places. He said effective arrangements should be made for the security of foreigners visiting Lahore at the time of the elections, adding divisional SPs should be personally present in case of any law and order situation.

He said instead of establishing permanent pickets, mobile pickets should be set up across the city and citizens should not be stopped unnecessarily.
