LAHORE – Two robbers were arrested red-handed on Sunday minutes after they stole the epitaphs from various graves in a graveyard in the Raiwind City police limits. The robbers were identified as Malik Imran (30) and the 15-year-old Waqas Dogar, both residents of Okara.
According to the preliminary reports, the robbers confessed to their involvement in the crime. They, however, maintained that they were fruit-sellers but when they failed to meet both the ends, they started committing the aforesaid crime. Police investigators said the residents of the area had been lodging complaints about the disappearance of iron-made epitaphs from the Railway Graveyard for the last several months. On Sunday morning, the locals arrested the two robbers and recovered from their possession many epitaphs,” a senior police investigator said. Fiaz Ahmed Bajaj, security officer of Anjuman Tajran, told reporters that the robbers used to steal epitaphs and sold them to a workshop owner, namely Suleman Niazi. Meanwhile, two police constables – Umar Hayat and Zohaib – reached the site and took the robbers into their custody for further investigation.
Earlier, the locals staged a protest demonstration against the police. The protesters said the police concerned had failed in providing them security, as even the graves of their near and dear ones were not safe. However, shortly after the incident, a case was lodged against the accused on the statement of Fiaz Bajaj. Further investigations are underway.
