LAHORE, Aug 14: For the first time in the history of Punjab, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif gave commendation certificates and cash prizes to 63 civil and police officials of various ranks for their outstanding service at the Civil Secretariat here on Sunday.

Chief Secretary Nasir Khosa, IGP Javaid Iqbal and administrative secretaries of all departments were present during the award giving ceremony.

All the 63 officials belonged to the S&GAD, police, finance, communication, irrigation, housing, local government and industries department and they were given Rs50,000 each as cash prize.

The chief minister said the new tradition set by his government would encourage the officials showing their best, and serve as an incentive for those lagging behind, motivating them to also prove their mettle.

He said he highly valued those officials who took keen interest in rendering public service and completion of public welfare projects. He said his government would fully patronize them.

Mr Shahbaz said that civil servants would have to vow on the occasion of the Independence Day that they would come up to such expectations of people for which the country was created.

He said the country came into being in the leadership of the Quaid-i-Azam and the people rendered countless sacrifices with the hope that there would be rule of law and provision of equal rights and opportunities of progress for its citizens. “Today we are required to assess as to which extent we have fulfilled the aspirations of the Quaid,” he said.

He said the country stood at a critical juncture, facing the most difficult period of its history. “But the living nations face all difficulties with bravery. Driving the country out of the troubled waters is difficult but not impossible. We will have to vow to put the country to the road to prosperity and progress with hard work and dedication,” he said.

Mr Shahbaz praised the chief secretary for devising the reward and punishment mechanism, and the IGP for his efforts to improve law and order in the province.

He assured the civil servants that the government would continue to patronize them for showing excellent performance and alleviating the sufferings of people.

The chief secretary said under the policy working of all officials was being assessed by a core team. The services of those officials found showing excellent performance would be recognized in three phases.
