RAWALPINDI-The City Traffic Police (CTP) have made the process of issuing driving licences impartial and far stricter to significantly improve safety on roads.
It was the result of merit-based policy of CTP that only 20,134 candidates have been issued fresh driving licences out of 92,356 applicants who obtained learning licences during the year of 2013, said Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Ishtiaq Hussain Shah talking to media here on Thursday.
He said that the driving licences were issued those who had proper knowledge of road rules and regulations as well as traffic signboards' awareness. He informed that City Traffic Police have also converted a total of 20,319 copy type licences to computerised licences while renewed 1560 licences last year.
Similarly, police issued 1310 duplicate licences top the applicants and endorsed 702 licences. The City Traffic Police told that some 1590 international standard driving licences were also issued to the citizens during 2013.
Syed Ishtiaq Hussain Shah was of view that said the main cause of frequent road accidents was lack of awareness about traffic rules and regulations among motorists and City Traffic Police would issue licences purely on merit base in 2014 to reduce the accident ratio on roads.
