LAHORE:The traffic police will place 100 awareness signs across the city starting from The Mall in a week. The signboards will carry messages regarding the use of helmets, seat belts, importance of adherence to traffic rules and traffic lights. The idea is to educate the masses, Chief Traffic Officer Tayyab Hafeez Cheema said.
He told The Express Tribune that the traffic police had collected funds for the signboards themselves.
Several traffic wardens, including women wardens, attended a two-week long training workshop on how to use megaphones to raise awareness and guide commuters at various traffic junctions. Cheema said these wardens will educate the masses about line-and-lane discipline among various traffic rules and the need to halt before a zebra crossing.
He said they would distribute 150 megaphones among traffic wardens stationed at the main traffic junctions in the city. “This will hopefully improve traffic flow in the city.” The CTO said they were making extra efforts to raise awareness and to make the roads of Lahore safe for travel. He urged people to cooperate with traffic wardens. “They are there to facilitate you.”
Cheema warned against failure to comply with a red traffic signal. “Breaking traffic rules and negligent driving can result in fatal accidents.”Traffic police have launched several awareness campaigns over the past few months to raise awareness regarding traffic rules. They distribute leaflets carrying awareness messages regarding traffic rules, signals, and damages caused by violations.
Traffic City SP Rana Shujaat said they would target motorcycle drivers and public transporters in the campaign regarding lane-and-line discipline. He said he hoped it would help reduce the number of traffic accidents on the roads.
