Security of Courts: Police told to install CCTV cameras

Sep 20, 2013

LAHORE, Sept 19: A Lahore High Court division bench on Thursday directed the police to apprise about the arrest of an absconding accused involved in 118 cases of firing incidents on courts premises.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, also directed the police authorities to ensure installation of CCTV cameras at all subordinate courts in the province.

Earlier, Additional Inspector General Amlesh Khan submitted a report saying the police were finalising steps to make courts’ security foolproof. He told the bench that the police were going to recruit 1,000 personnel to increase deployment of police at courts.

The Punjab prosecutor general also appeared before the bench and stated that the police did not share information with prosecutors about investigation. He said the prosecution department had sent a draft of Standard Operating Procedures, but the IGP had not accepted it so far.

He pointed out that the police chief made an alteration in the draft to keep the prosecution department away from police functioning.

The chief justice remarked if the police and the prosecution improved their coordination, the accused would be punished soon and result-oriented coordination would restore confidence of people in courts. The bench adjourned further hearing till Oct 18.

Advocate Kashif Pasha had filed the petition questioning increasing firing incidents on court’s premises and poor security arrangements.
