12,000 arrested this year in Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR / FAISALABAD: As many as 12,000 people were arrested in 7,000 FIRs registered this year in Bahawalpur, District Police Officer Sohail Habib Tajik told a press conference on Thursday.
 
He was speaking to the media after distributing cash awards among policemen for their good performance.
 
The DPO said Rs140 million, two Kalashnikov rifles, 75 shot guns, 451 pistols, 88 carbines, four kilos of hashish, 48 stolen motorcycles and 35 cell phones were recovered from the suspects.
 
He said that 1,838 of the 12,000 people arrested this year were wanted in more than one cases each.
 
Earlier, DPO Tajik distributed cash prizes among three inspectors, three sub-inspectors, three assistant sub-inspectors and three constables.
 
He said more policemen would be recruited and more model police stations set up to improve law and order in the district.
 
44 Proclaimed offenders, 35 absconders arrested in Faisalabad
 
City police claimed on Thursday to have arrested 44 proclaimed offenders, 35 court absconders, 78 people suspected of drug peddling and 52 for possessing illicit weapons in a week.
 
Mian Waheed, a spokesman for the city police officer, told the media that the raiding teams had seized 4.112 kilos of heroin, 11.18 kilos of hashish and 1,129 bottles of liquor from the possession of these suspects and sealed two illegal distilleries.
 
He said three Kalashnikov rifles, 38 pistols (0.30 bore), two revolvers, five guns, three rifles, one carbine and 120 bullets were seized from the 52 people arrested for possession of illegal weapons.
 
Of the 44 proclaimed offenders arrested by the police, 14 were wanted for murders, attempted murders and robberies and kidnappings-for-ransom.
 
The police also arrested three men for consumption of liquor in public.
