Robber killed, another held in shootout

LAHORE, May 5: A robbery suspect in his 20s was killed and three others including two citizens suffered multiple injuries in a shootout involving two robbers and a police officer near Hamdard Chowk in Quaid-i-Azam Industrial Estate police limits on Sunday.
 
Police said Awais Niaz died on the spot while his accomplice identified as Faisal Butt, who suffered foot injury, was taken into custody.
 
Sadar SP (Operations) Javaid Iqbal told Dawn that New Anarkali Investigation In-charge Sub-Inspector Ulfat Ali was on his way by his private car to conduct a raid on a proclaimed offender when two robbers, riding a motorcycle, intercepted him around 10am.
 
He said one of the robbers opened the driver-side door and snatched a cell phone from Ulfat, who carried an official weapon in his car, while the other suspect pointed his gun towards the SI from front side.
 
Ulfat, who introduced self as a police official, attempted to pick his weapon upon which the robber standing in front of the car asked his accomplice to fire at the armed car rider.
 
He said the suspected robber opened fire indiscriminately, but the SI hided himself as the car door was already opened. The SP said a bullet hit the robber standing in front of the car while other shots fired by his accomplice, who snatched the cell phone, hit a motorcycle rickshaw driver identified as Rajab Ali and a woman passenger Shahida Perveen. Some bullets also hit the SI’s car.
 
The robber who got bullet wound to his chest died on the spot while his accomplice started running on foot which provided the SI an opportunity to shot at and injure him.
 
The SP said the three injured were shifted to Jinnah Hospital where their condition was stated to be stable. He said police seized two weapons, a motorcycle without number-plate and two masks from the spot. He said the injured robber was under investigation.
 
The robber’s body was shifted to Jinnah Hospital’s morgue for autopsy. Police have registered a case under sections 392, 302, 324, 353, 186 and 427 of Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of SI Ulfat.
