The Saddar Police Station on Thursday registered a case against 400 unidentified persons on the charges of vandalising Francisabad police checkpoint, damaging various shops and vehicles and firing at police officials.
A joint investigation team has been set up to undertake an inquiry into the incident.
On Tuesday, Christian and Muslim residents of Naroki, a neighborhood of Francisabad in Gujranwala City, had a minor argument which turned into a full-fledged riot a day later.
The trouble, which lasted for a couple of hours, saw a mob wielding sticks and guns attacking dozens of shops and vehicles and the police station in the area. A group of people also reportedly tried to attack a church in the locality.
Addressing the members from the Muslim and Christian communities and the workers of the Amn Committee in the Central Police Office (CPO), Deputy Commissioner Officer Gujranwala, Syed Najam Ahmed Shah, and CPO Abdul Razzaq Cheema said that the security of the citizens is the prime responsibility of the police and the cooperation of the residents is necessary for maintaining law and order.
They promised that a thorough investigation in the matter will be taken up by the police and offenders will be brought to justice.
A joint committee has also been set up which will give a report after an impartial investigation is carried out.
